We are fast approaching “go time” in the vineyard. The vines will be waking up soon- probably by the middle of April- so all our efforts are focused on preparing for the new growing season. Being in the vineyard at this time of year feels like waiting for Christmas morning. We are full of anticipation for what is to come as the buds open and become leaves with the promise of beautiful fruit. As part of that preparation, we had a winter pruning day in February at Woodfeather Farm where we cut off last year’s canes, so the remaining spurs are ready to support this year’s growth.
Many of our vineyard family came out for the day to prune and we completed the entire vineyard! It was great to catch up with current and former staff as we worked the rows together. There is such a great community that gathers around nurturing the vines. We all become very invested in their growth and success from cold winter pruning days through the heat waves in July. Woodfeather Farm is planning to build a hoop house later this year so we can propagate grape vines from this year’s cuttings for future vineyard expansion.
